Sidney E. (Sid) Havens, of Narragansett, formally of Charlestown, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, November 14, 2022, at the age of 90. Born in Westerly, RI, Sidney was the son of the late George D. Havens and Jennie R. (Howard) Havens.
After serving in the U.S Army, Sid had a long 40-year career with General Dynamics - Electric Boat in the model shop, along with fulfilling his passion for plants at their nursery, Scenic Gardens, for more than 50 years. While running a full greenhouse nursery operation, he was known throughout the area as an expert in roses who could propagate anything.
With a natural green thumb, Sid was always one who not only stopped to smell the roses, but also grew thousands for everyone to enjoy. Sid was recognized and respected by other nursery owners as the “go to” person for growing advice. Everyone valued his insight and knew his suggestions would yield great results. In his spare time, Sid would be found sailing his Hobie 16 along with enjoying other pleasures on the Great Salt Pond. He was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge #20 for over 50 years.
Sidney is survived by his spouse of 62 years, Bette (Moen) Havens, children George (Arlene) of West Hurley, NY, Marilyn McCullough of Narragansett, Charles (Mazilla) of Richmond along with grandchildren Lauren, Michael, and Andrew. He is predeceased by his parents, George and Jennie Havens and stepfather Andrew Keller, siblings, George D. Havens II, Robert (Bob) H. Havens, Jackie Keller, Shirley Hilton and his granddaughter Sarah Jane McCullough.
The Havens family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, November 20th from 3 to 6 PM at the S.R. Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank Street, Hope Valley, R.I. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, November 21st, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at White Brook Cemetery.
