Peter F. Zegarzewski, 80, of Charlestown, passed away on September 1, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Leola “Cookie” Zegarzewski. They would have been married 60 years in October. Born in Westerly, RI on December 14, 1941, he was the son of the late Stephan J. Zegarzewski and the late Dorothy Ouellette Zegarzewski. He was predeceased by his son, Peter S. Zegarzewski in June of 2021 and his late brother Ronald Zegarzewski.
He leaves his family who he was immensely proud of and spent so much time with:
His children: Tammy Poston (Jerald), Todd Zegarzewski (Stacy) and his daughter in law Tracy Zegarzewski;
his grandchildren, Alexander Zegarzewski (Toni), Lauren Vo (Daniel), Tyler Zegarzewski (Amalea), Bryan Poston (Melanie), Colin Zegarzewski (Taylor), and Corey Zegarzewski (Madeleine);
his great-grandchildren, Avery Zegarzewski, Weber Zegarzewski, and Mia and Kayleigh Vo.
He is survived by his brother, Steven W. Zegarzewski and many nieces and nephews.
Peter was a graduate of Westerly High School and worked in the supermarket industry from his teenage years through his retirement. He worked at A&P, Almacs and retired from Shaws. During his retirement he worked part time at Belmont Marketplace with many of his old Almacs friends. He was a dedicated member of the Hope Valley Fire Department working Sunday night Bingo for 12 years to pay off the mortgage on the building the Fire Department is in now. He was a member of the Hope Valley Ambulance. He was also a parishioner at Christ the King in Kingston.
Sports of any kind were his passion especially Boston teams and any team his boys or grandchildren played on. He was known as Papa Z even to his grandchildren’s teammates because he attended every game.
A celebration of his life with a Mass of Christian Burial will be at Christ the King, Kingston, RI on
Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 10:00am. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Wood River Cemetery, Richmond, RI. Calling hours are omitted. Arrangements coordinated by SR Avery Funeral Home Hope Valley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital Boston, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
