Joyce C. Smith

Joyce C. (Casey) Smith, 85, of Ashaway, beloved wife of the late Gordon E. Smith, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 1, 2022 in Hospice Care at the Westerly Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Westerly on December 8, 1936 to James J. Casey and Evelyn M. (Maines) Casey she attended local schools and graduated from Westerly High with the Class of 1954. She worked as a homemaker while raising her children and after her husband's death worked as the Deputy Town Clerk for the Town of Hopkinton and also kept the books for the Ashaway Fire District for 30 years. Joyce was a gentle soul who was loved by all who knew her.

Predeceased by her parents, husband, and brother Michael J. Casey, Joyce is survived by her children - Gordon J. Smith of Moultonborough, NH, Laura J. Hinchey of Concord, NH, Steven E. Smith (Dorothy) of Rumford, RI, Mark T. Smith (Tracy) of South Portland, ME, and Kathleen J. Stauffer (Matthew) of Fort Mill, SC. She also leaves her loving sisters Anne Gillmore of Ashaway, Jean Clark of Enfield, CT, Margaret "Peg" Cherenzia of Westerly, and Janet Burbine of Ashaway as well as 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held from 5-7pm on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at the S.R. Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank St., Hope Valley, RI. Funeral services will be held the following day, Thursday, January 6 with friends welcome for 10:30am and the service at 11:00am at the funeral home followed by burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Ashaway.
