Joseph James Overend

July 25, 1934 ~ December 31, 2023 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Joseph James Overend, 89, of East Coventry Twp., formerly of Hope Valley, RI, passed away on December 31, 2023, at Phoenixville Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean (Zegarzewski) Overend, and together, they cherished 58 years of unwavering love and devotion until her passing on June 29, 2018.

Born in Pawtucket, RI, on July 25, 1934, Joe was the son of the late Aloysius Joseph Overend and Janet (Shorrock) Overend.

Throughout his childhood, the family lived in various locations in RI and a brief period in PA, but Hope Valley was his long-time home. He met Jean ice skating on Locustville Pond and up until 3 years ago he still lived in the house they built on Fairview Avenue. Joe finished his business career in 1995 at General Dynamics and loved to talk about his job doing quality inspections on nuclear submarines. He then spent the next 25 years of retirement working at local golf courses, with his last job being at Fenner Hill Golf Course in Hope Valley. He enjoyed the “walking around money” but mostly the discounted golf and more importantly, the friendships with his co-workers and golf league buddies. He was an avid fisherman, a great bowler, and for some years he was a scratch golfer. He could boast of 6 holes-in-one and shot his age or better a few times. He and Jean enjoyed many rounds of golf on their annual trips to Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, and Florida in their retired years. He always wanted to be remembered as being a “good guy” and he most definitely accomplished that. Even in his final days and weeks in the hospital he was making staff members smile with his humor, great attitude, and bright eyes. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten and we look forward to the day that we will be reunited with him in heaven.

Joe is lovingly remembered by his sons and daughter-in-law, Michael and Valerie Overend and Steven Overend; his grandchildren, Shawn, Ryan, and Anna Overend, Janet Lyons, Joshua, and Christopher Overend; his great-granddaughter, Madelyn Lyons; and his sister, Peg Eldredge. In addition to his wife and parents, Joe was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Ironside; and his daughter-in-law, Sylvia Overend.

A visitation to celebrate the life of Joe will take place at a later date, and the specific details will be announced in due course. This gathering will be held at S.R. Avery Funeral Home, located at 3A Bank Street, Hope Valley, RI 02832. We kindly ask that you check back for updated service details as we come together to remember and honor Joe’s memory.
