John James Tretton, 86, of Richmond, RI and Port Charlotte, FL, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday February 13, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn (Wallace) Tretton.
Born in Pawtucket, RI on June 10, 1936 he was the son of the late John J. Tretton, Sr. and Anna (Pfefferle) Tretton.
John received his Bachelor’s degree from Providence College and went onto to receive his Master’s degree in Social Work from Boston College. After graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the United Sates Army. He served for 8 years and was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves with the rank of Captain. John devoted his career to service with positions as a social worker with the state of RI, a professor in Boston University graduate school of Social Work, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and US Government as a Program Specialist for the Department of Children Youth and Family.
John was a dedicated runner and had run several marathons over the years. He also, had been an avid golfer throughout his life.
Besides his loving and devoted wife of over 63 years he will be sadly missed by his two sons, John James Tretton III and his wife Diane of Marco Island, FL and Scott T. Tretton and his wife Amy of Richmond, RI. He also leaves his loving grandchildren, John, Philip and his wife Liz, Allison, Lindsay, Gabrielle, Gianna, Anna, and two great grandchildren, Jameson and Magnolia. He also leaves his brother David Tretton (Mary) of New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his grandson Scott Jr., great grandson Oliver and his sister Elizabeth Tretton.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday February 18, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd, Kingston, RI. A reception will follow the mass in the church hall. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
