Joanne E. Pierce

Joanne (Smith) Pierce passed away on August 17th at South County Hospital. Joanne was the wife of Irwin “Chappy” Pierce of Carolina, RI for 58 years. She was the mother of Thomas Pierce and his partner Jennifer Diggin of Hingham, MA, Keith Pierce of North Kingstown and Melissa (Pierce) Mitchell and her husband John Mitchell of Cranston. She is predeceased by her step daughter Wendy (Pierce) Stewart and her husband Scott Stewart of Massachusetts. Joanne also had 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Joanne was born March 30, 1937 and grew up in Dighton, Massachusetts and was the daughter of John and Anna (Horton) Smith. She was the sister of the late John Smith of Taunton MA and his wife Elaine and the late Pam (Smith) Leach of Dighton MA and her husband Ralph. Joanne graduated from Dighton High School in 1955, Bridgewater State College with a degree in education in 1959 and received her Master’s degree from Bridgewater State in 1964.
Before starting her family she was a teacher in Rehoboth, MA and Westerly, RI. She also taught overseas on an Air Force base in Libya. Joanne was a long time attendee Carolina Baptist Church and most recently of First Baptist Church of Hope Valley. Besides her family some of her favorite things were ice cream, chocolate and a good book! She will be dearly missed.  

Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at First Baptist Church, 1059 Main St. Hope Valley, RI. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church beginning at 2:00pm for a calling hour before the service. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
