Jean L. (Nimmo) Handell, 91, of Hope Valley, passed away peacefully at the Apple Rehab Clipper on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. She was the loving wife of the late Clarence L. Handell who preceded in her death in 2001. Born in Providence on October 3, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Olga (Sanders) Nimmo.
Growing up, Jean attended schools in Richmond and Westerly. In her younger years, she was a den mother affiliated with Troop 1, Richmond and was chairman of the Red Cross Drive, March of Dimes and more recently was an active member of the Richmond Seniors Meal on Wheels. She was also a member of the Richmond Seniors Activities Committee and Historical Society. She retired from the school lunch program at the Chariho and Richmond school systems. Most importantly, she loved her family and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her son Steven S. Handell and his wife Pamela (Downs) Handell, a grandchild Jennifer Lynn Handell and a niece Karen Hall. She was predeceased by her sister Ruth V. Hannuksela and brother Robert W. Nimmo.
Funeral services were held privately on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, with burial at the R.I. Veteran Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
The S.R Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank St., Hope Valley, R.I., is assisting the family with arrangements.
