Daniel Francis Harrington, Jr., of Hope Valley and Newport, Rhode Island, passed away in Newport surrounded by his loving family on January 31. He was the son of Daniel Francis and Lillian Marie (O’Brien) Harrington. He was predeceased by his parents and, in November by his wonderful brother Brendan Harrington.
Dan is survived by his wife, Mary Anne (Flannery) who he met at a dance at Salve Regina while he attended Providence College. Dan and Mary Anne celebrated 61 wonderful years of marriage.
Dan is also survived by his children Daniel Francis III (Kimberly Cole), Kevin Patrick (N. Gabriella Dadamio), Michael Thomas, and Holly Anne (Amy Cardwell), six grandchildren Daniel IV, Matthew (Leah Reynolds), Andrew, Ryan, Lucas, and Christopher, great grandchildren Emma and Riley, nieces Lisa Fearing, Stacey Harrington, Maura Farrell, and nephew Sean Harrington.
Dan grew up in Pawtucket, RI and attended St. Raphael and Providence College. After college Dan served in the US Army. He was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Baumholder, Germany. Upon returning to the states, Dan began his career as a sales representative of elementary and high school textbooks with Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, MacMillian, and DC Heath (now Houghton Mifflin).
After retirement Dan enjoyed working as a tour guide at the former Hammersmith Farm, childhood home of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. He also was an extra in the movies Amistad and Meet Joe Black. He had a lifelong love of books and learning. He was a member of the Circle of Scholars at Salve Regina. He collected books and “intriguing objects”. Many a Sunday he could be found at the Seekonk Flea Market.
Dan had a love of walking his dogs throughout his neighborhood in Newport, always with a wave and a greeting to all he passed.
The Memorial Service will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to S.R. Avery Funeral Home in Hope Valley.
