Clayton W. Fortune

Clayton Wilford Fortune II died peacefully in his home in Hope Valley, RI on Wednesday, September 12, 2018. He was predeceased by his parents, Eleanor (O’Malley) Cochran and Clayton Fortune, his sister, Mary (Fortune) Graham, and his faithful dog and friend, Wellington.

He graduated from Chariho High School in 1963 and attended West Liberty State College in West Virginia. Upon earning a Bachelors in Science, he returned home where he would teach English and History at Chariho High School for 28 years until his retirement. During his stay at Chariho, he coached girls slow pitch softball for 21 years and in 2008 was inducted to the Chariho Regional High School Athletic Hall of Fame for excellence in coaching softball and field hockey. In addition, Clayton was a fun loving guy, with a quick wit and a great sense of humor, who enjoyed crossword puzzles, politics and talking about the Boston Red Sox.  He will be missed by his former students, his friends, and his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Nicole Fortune-Allen and her husband Darrin of Richmond, RI, his son, Scott Fortune of Hope Valley, RI, and his daughter, Tabetha Fortune-Delaney and her husband David of West Greenwich, RI. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Gavin, Ryan, Christian, Nathan, Julia, McKenzie, and Cale.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2018 from 4:00 - 7:00 at the S.R Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank St., Hope Valley, RI.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Clayton's life.
