Charles Eugene Place, Sr., 90, of Hope Valley, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2019 at South County Hospital. He was devoted to his wife of 67 years, Mary Emma Alice (Burdick) Place who predeceased him. Born on September 9, 1929 in Newport, VT, he was the son of the late Harold Eugene and Adeline (Taylor) Place.
Charles was a hardworking and dedicated family man. He enjoyed being the Manager of Public Works of Hopkinton until his retirement and worked for Posi-Seal and Electric Boat along with his carpentry. His sawmill in the back yard of his home was his little get-away where he would spend time on his personal projects. He would also spend time in the yard gardening and relaxing in the outdoors. Most importantly, he loved his family, especially his time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, which were some of his most precious memories. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He leaves his children Rosemary Dumas of FL, Sherry Hull of Hope Valley, Kathy Matteson of CT, Curnel Place of Hope Valley, Terry Cahoon and husband Scott of Hope Valley and Timothy Place of Hope Valley; 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great grandchildren; a brother Neil Place and wife Angie of Richmond; a daughter-in-law Sue Place along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son Charles Place, Jr.; a daughter Bonnie Pelchat and 3 siblings Lawrence Place, Pauline Swafford and Ronald Place.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019 from 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. at the S.R. Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank St. Hope Valley. A service will take place at 4:00p.m. at the funeral home following the calling hours. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
