Bryan Gordon Whelan, 89, of Hope Valley, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on Sunday, October 8, 2023. He was the loving husband of Roberta “Babs” Mariane (McCutcheon) Whelan and together they shared 60 years of marriage. Born in Australia on August 29, 1934, he was the son of the late Thomas Charles Whelan and Evelyn (Nunn) Whelan.
Bryan was a Textile Chemist who enjoyed a long and gratifying career in the textile industry. This career brought him from Australia to Canada where he met Babs, and finally to the United States where he spent most of his career working for Kenyon Industries and then for the Bradford Dyeing Association.
He enjoyed skiing, gardening, golf, reading, and seeing new parts of the world whenever the opportunity arose. He was a pianist who frequently entertained visitors with a waltz or even a classic country song. Bryan was a highly intelligent, reserved man who loved family and privacy above all. He grew the most beautiful roses which he delighted in presenting to Babs.
Besides his wife, he leaves his children Bryan Scott Whelan of BC, Canada and Darren Robert Whelan and his wife Susan Elaine (Ansay) Whelan of Ashaway, RI; grandchildren Brittni (Paliotta) Ferguson and her husband Stephen Ferguson of Shannock, RI, Katlynn (Paliotta) Heroux and her husband Devan Heroux of Richmond, RI, Bryar Scott Whelan and his fiancée Caterina Anderson of Richmond, RI, and Kylee Rose Whelan of Ashaway, RI. He also leaves four great-grandchildren that he absolutely adored: Emma, Bella, Parker, and Wyatt “the-Burp”.

Family and friends are invited together at the S.R. Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank St., Hope Valley, RI 02832 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Friday, October 27, 2023. A celebration of life will follow the calling hours beginning at 5pm at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
