Herbert Ralph Hennessey

April 4, 1929 ~ June 4, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old
Herbert R. Hennessey, 88, of Warwick, RI, passed away on June 4, 2017 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol. Ralph, as he was known as to family and friends was born at home in Pawtucket on April 4, 1929. He was the son of the late John F. and Ella Schoerner Hennessey and brother to the late John F. Hennessey, Jr. He was the beloved husband of the late Sylvia Hennessey who recently passed away in March. They were married for over 61 years and rarely seen apart. They enjoyed babysitting their 3 grandchildren and granddog “Daisy”, eating at Marchetti’s Restaurant every Friday night and hanging out at McDonalds with their other retired friends.

He attended Tollman High School until the 11th grade when he decided to go
to work as a bricklayer in Pawtucket. Ralph was a Korean War Veteran and served as a 3rd class machinist on the USS Antietam Aircraft Carrier. He served in the Navy from 1950 to 1954 and was honorably discharged.

After the war, he met the love of his life, Sylvia Paliy, at Gibson’s Ice Cream Shop
in Pawtucket. They married, made their home and raised a family in Warwick. He had been the proprietor of Hennessey’s ARCO Station in Warwick and Providence for 30 years before retiring.

His grandchildren filled his life with much joy. For the past 20 years he babysat weekly in Hope Valley where he could be found every Monday playing games, shooting hoops or making American chop suey for the family. Grandpa Ralph will be greatly missed by his three grandchildren.

He leaves two daughters, Cynthia A. Tracy of Smithfield and Nancy J. Wilcox of Hope Valley, sons in law Paul Tracy and Paul Wilcox and his three grandchildren Matthew, Julie and Zachary Wilcox.

Ralph’s family would like to thank Dr. Winters and The Rhode Island Veterans Home for the wonderful care he received.

The funeral will be at Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank St. in Hope Valley on Friday June 16, 2017 at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home the morning of the services from 9:00a.m. to 10:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to RI Veterans Home, 480 Metacom Ave, Bristol, RI 02809.
