Esther I. (Dawley) Fleck, 86, of Wood River Junction, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Francis E. Fleck, Sr. Born in Charlestown, RI on June 10, 1931, she was the daughter of the late John J.A. and Margaret (Green) Dawley.
Esther enjoyed learning and proudly graduated from the RI College of Education with a Bachelor’s Degree. Soon after she met and married Francis and together they raised their family with traditional values. She was a hardworking and strong willed woman who strived to do what was best for the family and made unselfish sacrifices to hold the family together after the passing of her husband. Esther kept active with her children’s activities as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and as a Girl Scout Leader. She also participated in horseshoes through the Meadow Muffin League. She enjoyed watching basketball and auto racing, regularly attended Seekonk Speedway with her family, and was a fan of NASCAR and the Boston Celtics – she even drove a stock car at the Seekonk Speedway. Her faith was central to her life as well and she gave her time to the First Baptist Church of Charlestown, RI at Quonochontaug as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also worked for the Chariho Transit as a School Bus Driver for over 20 years. Esther constantly gave of herself and did it all with a smile on her face. She will be so dearly missed by all those who knew her.
She is survived by her children Francis E. Fleck, Jr. and his wife Alison of Westerly, Michael Fleck and his wife Lorraine of Apollo Beach FL, Donna Ferraro and her husband John of Charlestown and Karrie L. Piper and her husband John of Richmond; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother Arthur Dawley and his wife Carol; a daughter-in-law Deb Fleck of Wyoming; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Noel Fleck, Sr., brothers John and Fred Dawley and a sister JoAnne Werrbach.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the S.R. Avery Funeral Home, 3A Bank St. in Hope Valley. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Hope Valley. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 5 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
