Arthur “Ray” Smith, 97, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2017 in
Fort Myers, Fl. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Perry) Smith and
predeceased by his son Bradley Ray Smith. He was the son of Fred W. Smith, Sr
and Sarah Elizabeth (Barber) Smith. He was born in Wyoming, RI where he lived
for many years before moving to Fort Myers Beach, FL.
He was a graduate of Westerly High School and Bryant College. He was the past
President of Fred W. Smith Inc, the Dodge Chrysler dealership, in Wakefield, RI.
Ray served in the Army Air Force during WW II as a Glider Pilot and participated in the
Normandy Invasion on D-Day and other campaigns in Holland, Italy and Belgium. He
was the recipient of various awards and medals for his accomplishments.
He was renowned for his outgoing personality, sense of humor and kindness towards all.
There was no greater storyteller than Ray and he shared them much to the delight of us all.
Ray is survived by his son, Randall A. Smith of Wyoming, RI and his grandchildren, Dane
Smith of Canton, MA and Erica Smith of Wickford, RI and three great-grandchildren. He
was the brother of Robert O. Smith of Wakefield, RI, his sister Carol Greene of Wyoming,
RI, and his late sister, Hope Morin. He was also the step-brother to the late Fred W. Smith Jr.
He also leaves a dear friend of many years, Pamela Fillmore of Fort Myers, FL.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 10am at the Wood River Cemetery in Richmond, RI.
